At a depth of 150 metres under the Rhine valley lie huge deposits of salt. Since they were discovered around 150 years ago, the Rhine salt mines have been supplying practically the whole of Switzerland with salt. Every year, a good 250,000 tons of salt are extracted from the Rhine valley. At the ‘Schweizer Salinen’ works, you will see how the saline is extracted from the ground and turned into salt in evaporation plants. You can follow the whole process at the works. In addition, you can find out all about the diverse and wonderful world of salt in the ‘Salzkammer’ museum.
